HOMESTAY COORDINATOR
A Homestay Coordinator is employed by the District to act as liaison between the students, parents and homestay parents. It is the Coordinator's responsibility to assist the students in a successful transition to Canadian living.
The Coordinator receives and processes student applications and inquiries, as well as recruits and corresponds with the International students before they come to Powell River. Students are provided with an orientation upon their arrival and assisted with their course selections. Throughout the school year, the Coordinator is available to International students to help them with problems, give advice or provide information they require. As well, the Coordinator plans special events and activities such as an annual Christmas party, ski trip and camping trip.
HOMESTAY FAMILIES
All International students are placed with English speaking families in single family dwellings carefully selected by the Homestay Coordinator. The homestay family is to provide their student with the security of a family and a cultural education in a home setting which will enable the student to experience "true" Canadian living. The Homestay component is compulsory. Legal Guardianship arrangements are available.
HOMESTAY FEES
Students pay their monthly Homestay fee directly to the homestay family. Room and board includes meals but excludes personal articles, personal activities and entertainment expenses. Students may be expected to prepare their own breakfast and lunch but all the groceries are provided by the homestay family. Students will have their own bedroom, bedding, closet, chest of drawers, desk, study lamp and access to laundry facilities.
